Professor Robert Davis' research, published in his book "Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters," estimates that between 1530 and 1780, over a million Europeans were enslaved by Muslims in North Africa. Some estimates suggest this number could have reached 1.25 million.

These enslaved Europeans faced harsh conditions, similar to those endured by African slaves in the transatlantic slave trade. They were often forced into labor, including galley rowing, and some were subjected to conversion to Islam.
